In our latest blog, we talked about the most important part of organizing your home office: evaluating your needs and designing your office space to fit your lifestyle. Now that you have your perfect home office- how do you organize it? Try some of these helpful hints:

1. PURGE! That’s right- it’s time to clean out your home office. Get rid of things that you don’t need and that are just taking up space. A general rule to follow is: if you haven’t used it in a year- throw it out! So, throw out those broken pens, old papers and magazines, and any other unwanted office supplies. By keeping things neat, tidy, and efficient you will streamline your office and your time.

2. Clean out your filing system. That’s right… we know nobody ever wants to do this… But, it will be helpful. We promise. It’s time to sort through those endless piles of paper. Shred unimportant files and organize your important ones. Just doing this will give you peace of mind when you walk into your office.

3.Clear off your desk. In order to feel organized your desk to be a clean space. Don’t store office supplies, printers, papers, mail, etc. on top of you desk. Clearing off your desk will make your space less cluttered. When designing your home office make sure you account for enough storage space.

4. One of the more accessible cupboards should include a space for your most current projects. Including incoming mail, bills to be paid, and outgoing mail. Stand-up file folders should help to organize your documents.

5. Clean out your computer. Yep, you’ve cleaned up your physical files and now it’s time to clean out your virtual ones. Spend an evening going through your computer and cleaning it up a bit. Erase old documents that you don’t need and create new files with short and definitive names to store the documents you do need. Name your pictures files by date so that you can easily find a picture you are looking for.

6. Buy a document shredder and a wastebasket for your office. This will help with anything unnecessary piling up around your office. Immediately shred any unwanted mail with personal information and toss the rest.

7. Place a picture or another sentimental piece to make your office feel more personal.

8. Consider carefully how you want to decorate your home office. More than likely you will spend a lot of time here. Consider what type of design elements you want to incorporate and slowly begin to add colors you want to incorporate. Create a Mirrored,Custom Storage Solution at Classy Closets

Incorporating mirrors in to the interior design of your home is a great way to brighten and enlarge any space in your home. Mirrors bring light and depth into a room and will essentially act as another window.

You can move mirrors around according to your taste or desire- allowing you to visually enlarge your space. Designer Celia Berliner advises, “The location and placement of the mirror are key when utilizing them- you want to make sure that it will not create undesirable reflections and will allow it to maximize its innate qualities.” Do not place mirrors in front of, or opposite, a cluttered space. Instead, choose a clean and calm space to enhance. You can try arranging multiple mirrors on the same wall, using a large mirror to enhance a small space, and use mirrors in every room of your home. Mirrors are a classic and simple way to enhance the beauty, space, and light of your home and space. Take a look at some of these pictures below for great ideas for mirror design and placement:

Another great way to visually expand the look of your space, add needed light, and additional storage is to create a custom storage solution that incorporate mirrors. You can add mirrors to your custom closet storage solution and add light and space in your master closet, add mirrors on a media/entertainment center, or even on your kitchen cabinets. Whether you see a small, outdated space or old appliances and the wrong color cabinets and countertops- it is possible to transform your space and get the kitchen you dream of. It’s true! No matter what your current space looks like you can create your dream kitchen.

I was watching my favorite channel, The DIY Network, last week and received some serious inspiration from a show called Kitchen Crashers.  The host Alison Victoria and her team go in to old, outdated, small, and/or awkward kitchens and restore them- turning them into dream kitchens. This show really proves that anything is possible! Take a look at some of the before and after pictures from their latest show:

The transformation is truly remarkable. I could hardly believe it was the same kitchen! The kitchen received new flooring, cabinets, counter tops, paint and appliances. The new cabinets and counter tops are definitely the show stoppers. The beautiful off-white cabinets lighten and brighten the kitchen, making it look larger. The beautiful marble counter tops are a great contrast to the cabinets and add a rich and luxurious feel to the kitchen.

It’s not time to throw in the towel on your old kitchen. There is so much possibility in any space, and this show proves it! Classy Closets of Scottsdale can help you rediscover your love for your kitchen space. We provide kitchen cabinets, counter tops, and flooring. How to Paint Upholstery

paint couch

Hey Scottsdale!

Do you have an old, outdated chair or couch that you want to refurnish? Recovering it is very expensive and takes time and skill. Try painting it! Painting your furniture is a great, inexpensive way to personalize your home!

1 quart of either acrylic or latex satin paint in the color of your choice

Spray bottle full of water (refillable)

Fabric medium (equal to the amount of paint you use)

Super fine grit sand paper

1. Wipe down the chair or couch so it’s completely clean.

2. Mix together 1:1 parts paint with fabric medium. The fabric medium helps the fabric from becoming hard. Then mix in water. There should be about ½ as much water as there is paint (1 part water, 2 parts paint).

3. Spray a section of the chair generously with water and rub the water into the fabric. Brush on the paint and blend it in with your hands. This base coat is supposed to be very watered down, so don’t overdo it. Make sure to brush with the grain on your last stroke.

4. Apply two coats of this watered down mixture to the chair. Each layer should be very thin. If it’s too thick in some places, add more water. Be sure to let each layer dry completely before starting a new one.

5. If there are any rough patches, sand them down in the direction of the grain.

6. Lastly, apply the top coat. Once again, mix 1:1 parts paint with fabric medium. Add in only a small amount of water to dilute the mixture. This coat gives the chair its deep color, so apply the paint more generously and don’t miss anything. Let dry.

The paint shouldn’t rub off, so put this chair anywhere you want and enjoy!

DIY Nail Polish Rack

Hey Scottsdale!

Nail polish racks aren’t just for the salon! Instead of leaving them haphazardly stored in drawers, ready to leak and spill, you can build your own rack and make a home for your nail polishes. Making your own rack will allow you to personalize it to your needs. You can make it as big or as small as you want and whatever color you please.

1” x 2” wood for the shelves and sides (1” width and 2” depth).

Screws (you will probably need about 24)

Dry wall anchors that support up to 75 lbs.

Hanging hooks

Wood glue

Nail filler

Sand paper

First, cut the wood to your width specifications. Lay them out, evenly spaced, on a flat surface. Four inches is a good width between shelves and will be enough for your tallest polishes.

Then screw all of the shelves into one side, and then the other. This will ensure that you keep everything proportioned and even.

Glue, then screw wood trim pieces to the front of each shelf to keep them from falling out the front. Then fill in al the screw holes with nail filler and sand it.

Now you can paint! Choose any color you like! But make sure it matches the décor of the rest of the room.

After the paint has dried, screw hanging hooks into the top corners of your nail polish rack.

Hang on the wall with your dry wall anchors, and you’re done! Place your nail polishes up on the rack for all to enjoy!

Build Your Own Drying Rack!

ladder drying rack

Hey Scottsdale!

Arizona summers are tough on your wallet. The outside heat pushes your thermostat lower and lower, which pushes your electricity bill higher and higher. A great way to save your electricity bill is to hang dry your clothes! Instead of wasting electricity to use the dryer, build your own drying rack! An easy way to do this is to simple upcycle and old, wooden ladder.

First, get a wooden ladder. It could be sitting in your garage or even at a swap meet. Feel free to keep it long or saw it down to a more manageable length. If you don’t already have one or don’t want to buy one, consider making your own with a couple 2x4s and some thick wooden dowels.

Next, prime and paint it to match your laundry room. For older ladders, sand it down to keep chips of wood out of your clothes and splinters out of your fingers.

Finally, screw four hooks into the ceiling of your laundry room at the appropriate distance from each other and four more into the four corners of your ladder. Attach the chains to the ladder and the ceiling. If you don’t want to hang it from your ceiling, simply prop it up against the wall!

We hope this unique piece will help you save money and electricity!

Organize Your Garage for the Summer

Hey Scottsdale!

The garage is probably one of the most missed places while cleaning. Between all the toys, bikes, scooters, and cars, the garage is also one of the messiest and chaotic. Take back control of your garage by using some simple organizational tips!

Start by de-cluttering your garage. Take out old toys and donate them to charity. Throw out all the trash that has accumulated throughout the years. This will diminish the mess and make the task seem much less daunting.

After de-cluttering, it’s time to start organizing! Start by utilizing the wall space. Hang up pegboards on the walls to house your tools. Use hooks or screwdriver racks to hang them on the pegboards. This will keep your tools off the workbench, leaving more room for work to be done.

Next, hang up shovels, rakes, and weed wackers on the wall with heavy-duty hooks. This keeps them from being knocked over or leaning against the wall, not to mention it gives you a clear, open walking space.

Hang a bike rack or hook on the wall to make more room for cars.

Finally, keep basketballs, footballs, and baseballs off the ground with a ball rack.

For a finishing touch, change the bulbs in your garage lighting to make a clean, open feeling and give the door a good scrubbing!
