In our latest blog, we talked about the most important part of organizing your home office: evaluating your needs and designing your office space to fit your lifestyle. Now that you have your perfect home office- how do you organize it? Try some of these helpful hints:

1. PURGE! That’s right- it’s time to clean out your home office. Get rid of things that you don’t need and that are just taking up space. A general rule to follow is: if you haven’t used it in a year- throw it out! So, throw out those broken pens, old papers and magazines, and any other unwanted office supplies. By keeping things neat, tidy, and efficient you will streamline your office and your time.

2. Clean out your filing system. That’s right… we know nobody ever wants to do this… But, it will be helpful. We promise. It’s time to sort through those endless piles of paper. Shred unimportant files and organize your important ones. Just doing this will give you peace of mind when you walk into your office.

3.Clear off your desk. In order to feel organized your desk to be a clean space. Don’t store office supplies, printers, papers, mail, etc. on top of you desk. Clearing off your desk will make your space less cluttered. When designing your home office make sure you account for enough storage space.

4. One of the more accessible cupboards should include a space for your most current projects. Including incoming mail, bills to be paid, and outgoing mail. Stand-up file folders should help to organize your documents.

5. Clean out your computer. Yep, you’ve cleaned up your physical files and now it’s time to clean out your virtual ones. Spend an evening going through your computer and cleaning it up a bit. Erase old documents that you don’t need and create new files with short and definitive names to store the documents you do need. Name your pictures files by date so that you can easily find a picture you are looking for.

6. Buy a document shredder and a wastebasket for your office. This will help with anything unnecessary piling up around your office. Immediately shred any unwanted mail with personal information and toss the rest.

7. Place a picture or another sentimental piece to make your office feel more personal.

8. Consider carefully how you want to decorate your home office. More than likely you will spend a lot of time here. Consider what type of design elements you want to incorporate and slowly begin to add colors you want to incorporate. For design ideas see this Classy Closets’ blog post, and watch for more like it very soon.

Create a Mirrored,Custom Storage Solution at Classy Closets

Incorporating mirrors in to the interior design of your home is a great way to brighten and enlarge any space in your home. Mirrors bring light and depth into a room and will essentially act as another window.

You can move mirrors around according to your taste or desire- allowing you to visually enlarge your space. Designer Celia Berliner advises, “The location and placement of the mirror are key when utilizing them- you want to make sure that it will not create undesirable reflections and will allow it to maximize its innate qualities.” Do not place mirrors in front of, or opposite, a cluttered space. Instead, choose a clean and calm space to enhance. You can try arranging multiple mirrors on the same wall, using a large mirror to enhance a small space, and use mirrors in every room of your home. Mirrors are a classic and simple way to enhance the beauty, space, and light of your home and space. Take a look at some of these pictures below for great ideas for mirror design and placement:

Another great way to visually expand the look of your space, add needed light, and additional storage is to create a custom storage solution that incorporate mirrors. You can add mirrors to your custom closet storage solution and add light and space in your master closet, add mirrors on a media/entertainment center, or even on your kitchen cabinets. Scottsdale Classy Closets: How to Turn Your Ho-hum Kitchen Into Your Dream Kitchen

Are you feeling ho-hum about your current kitchen? Or even downright discouraged? It can be hard to look around your kitchen and envision it as anything else other than what it is. Whether you see a small, outdated space or old appliances and the wrong color cabinets and countertops- it is possible to transform your space and get the kitchen you dream of. It’s true! No matter what your current space looks like you can create your dream kitchen.

I was watching my favorite channel, The DIY Network, last week and received some serious inspiration from a show called Kitchen Crashers.  The host Alison Victoria and her team go in to old, outdated, small, and/or awkward kitchens and restore them- turning them into dream kitchens. This show really proves that anything is possible! Take a look at some of the before and after pictures from their latest show:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

The transformation is truly remarkable. I could hardly believe it was the same kitchen! The kitchen received new flooring, cabinets, counter tops, paint and appliances. The new cabinets and counter tops are definitely the show stoppers. The beautiful off-white cabinets lighten and brighten the kitchen, making it look larger. The beautiful marble counter tops are a great contrast to the cabinets and add a rich and luxurious feel to the kitchen.

It’s not time to throw in the towel on your old kitchen. There is so much possibility in any space, and this show proves it! Classy Closets of Scottsdale can help you rediscover your love for your kitchen space. We provide kitchen cabinets, counter tops, and flooring. Classy Closet’s designers are professional and innovative and can help you design the perfect kitchen.

DIY Nail Polish Rack

nailpolishrack

Hey Scottsdale!

Nail polish racks aren’t just for the salon! Instead of leaving them haphazardly stored in drawers, ready to leak and spill, you can build your own rack and make a home for your nail polishes. Making your own rack will allow you to personalize it to your needs. You can make it as big or as small as you want and whatever color you please.

Materials:

1” x 2” wood for the shelves and sides (1” width and 2” depth).

Screws (you will probably need about 24)

Dry wall anchors that support up to 75 lbs.

Hanging hooks

Wood glue

Nail filler

Sand paper

Paint

Saw

First, cut the wood to your width specifications. Lay them out, evenly spaced, on a flat surface. Four inches is a good width between shelves and will be enough for your tallest polishes.

Then screw all of the shelves into one side, and then the other. This will ensure that you keep everything proportioned and even.

Glue, then screw wood trim pieces to the front of each shelf to keep them from falling out the front. Then fill in al the screw holes with nail filler and sand it.

Now you can paint! Choose any color you like! But make sure it matches the décor of the rest of the room.

After the paint has dried, screw hanging hooks into the top corners of your nail polish rack.

Hang on the wall with your dry wall anchors, and you’re done! Place your nail polishes up on the rack for all to enjoy!

Build Your Own Drying Rack!

ladder drying rack

Hey Scottsdale!

Arizona summers are tough on your wallet. The outside heat pushes your thermostat lower and lower, which pushes your electricity bill higher and higher. A great way to save your electricity bill is to hang dry your clothes! Instead of wasting electricity to use the dryer, build your own drying rack! An easy way to do this is to simple upcycle and old, wooden ladder.

First, get a wooden ladder. It could be sitting in your garage or even at a swap meet. Feel free to keep it long or saw it down to a more manageable length. If you don’t already have one or don’t want to buy one, consider making your own with a couple 2x4s and some thick wooden dowels.

Next, prime and paint it to match your laundry room. For older ladders, sand it down to keep chips of wood out of your clothes and splinters out of your fingers.

Finally, screw four hooks into the ceiling of your laundry room at the appropriate distance from each other and four more into the four corners of your ladder. Attach the chains to the ladder and the ceiling. If you don’t want to hang it from your ceiling, simply prop it up against the wall!

We hope this unique piece will help you save money and electricity!

Organize Your Jewelry

burlap jewelry organizer

Hey Scottsdale!

Jewelry can get disorganized and messy very quickly without a proper method to its madness. Necklaces are especially tricky. They seem to get tangled into unthinkable knots no matter what you do and earrings and rings can get lost if not stored properly. The key to all of these problems is organization. By taking the time to organize your jewelry, you can keep them looking like new. Cleaning them up also keeps the room looking neater.

One way to systemize your jewelry is a jewelry drawer. This is the most elegant looking organizing method. The drawer has small jewelry inserts for each piece of jewelry that will fit rings, bracelets, necklaces, or earrings. This will keep your necklaces separate and unable to tangle with each other. The jewelry drawer is a great accompaniment to a Classy Closet custom closet!

Not quite ready to overhaul your closet? Make your own easy, DIY jewelry holder. Simply find a frame and attach mesh, screen, or burlap to the back for an instant earring holder. Screw knobs onto the bottom of the frame for necklaces and bracelets to hang. To spruce it up even more, paint the frame to match your room!

For a more eclectic look, you can find unique ring and necklace holders that add interest to any room!

Organize Office, Garage, and Entertainment Center Cords

Hey Scottsdale!

We live in an era that relies heavily on electronics. We have TVs, phones, and computers at our fingertips at all times. With all these electronics come the mess and abundance of cords. Cords can make a mess of any office, garage, or entertainment center if you let them. However, we have a few tips that will keep them neat and organized!

binder clips

 1. Use binder clips to keep cords handy. This works best with laptop and other gadget chargers. To do this, simply release one clamp, slip the cord through, reattach the clamp, and clip it to your desk! This keeps your cords from being trampled on the ground and makes them convenient to find. Check out lihab’s Flickr set for step-by-step photos.

2. Label your cords. Power strips make identifying cords difficult, but by labeling them, whether you choose these kable flags or a homemade version, you’ll never accidently unplug your computer again!

3. Hide your cords with a foam pipe insulator. Keep your charging cords looking neat by slicing the foam down its length and storing the cords inside with the ends hanging out the slit. The Unclutterer blog has step-by-step photos to help you out.

cable tie

4. Tie up the slack. Most of the mess and sloppiness of cords comes from their length. Make your cords the perfect length by gathering the slack and tying it with cable ties. Although you can use regular zip ties to do the job, reusable ties can be used indefinitely without having to be cut.

papertowel extension cord

5. Store extension cords in a paper towel tube. This is a great tip for the garage, where extension cords can be hung on a pegboard. Although it is not the most attractive storing technique, you can manage your heaps of extension cords much easier.

cable-tray-black

6. Keep the cords off the floor using a wire basket. This can be used in any area, although the most obvious and practical is the office. Simply attach the wire basket to the underside of your desk and snake your cords under your desk and through it. This trick will keep the cords off the floor and give the illusion that there are no cords!
