Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Garage

Clean Garage is a Happy Garage
Clean Garage is a Happy Garage

Is your garage messy and disorganized? Here are some helpful hints to overhaul your messy garage. Sneak in a last minute garage cleaning before Spring Break!

1. Pressure wash the floor. Pressure washers are a great and easy way to quickly clean an exterior surface. You can either hire a company to come out and pressure wash your garage for you, or you can borrow or buy your own and do it yourself. You will be able to reach every inch and crack in the flooring and make it squeaky-clean! This is also a great opportunity to begin clearing out the (ahem,) junk in your garage and organizing it.

2.Organize your stuff. Grab a truck and begin by getting rid of all the stuff you haven’t used in a year and you know you won’t use again. Clearing away stuff that hasn’t been used it a great way to create more room for the things you do use! If it’s broken, load it in your truck. If you don’t use it, load it in your truck. If your kids have outgrown it, load it in your truck. Once you’ve done that, take a load to the dumpster and a load to your local donation box.

3. Buy compartments and mark them with a Sharpie. This way you’ll know just what box to grab when you need an extension cord, your flashlight or extra batteries.

4. Organize your tools. Organizing your tools and keeping them that way is easy with pegboards. Putting easy-to-use hooks up on the board keeps all of your tools on hand and easy to find.

5. Use the wall. For smaller garages, use the walls for storage. Hang bins, smaller cupboards, and shelves higher on the wall to make room for bikes, cars, and walking. You can also hang your rakes and shovels on the wall to keep the clutter off the ground.

6. Protect the floor. Place mats under your cars to keep oil from dripping on the cement. For best results, buy a professional grade mat. (But old rugs work great if you’re in a pinch. You can find cheap rugs at your local thrift store.)

7. Put up shelving. If you don’t already have built-in cupboards or shelving units in your garage, put up your own shelving. Garages can provide a lot of hidden storage, whether it’s for holiday decorations or sports equipment. Don’t want to do it yourself? Get it done professionally by Classy Closets! Our custom made storage solutions will help you double or triple your space.

Happy cleaning!

7 Tips to Decorate Your Master Closet

Decorating my closet: where do I begin?

Decorating my closet: where do I begin?

What you believe: A closet is that extra (annoying) space in your home to store junk and it never has enough room. You like the doors kept tightly shut.

What we believe: A closet is an extra space to store important belongings and it has ample space for all your storage needs. Your closet feels peaceful, organized and you wouldn’t mind the doors being left open because well, it’s just another part of your home that you love. Not convinced that you can actually grow to love your closet? We can help!

Besides installing beautiful and functional Classy Closets storage solutions that will double or triple your closet space, there are a couple other tips and tricks that will turn your closet from nightmare space into peaceful place. Most importantly, decorating your closet space… Follow along as we outline some simple design ideas and decorating tips for your closet:

1. Add personal touches. Many people falsely assume that a closet can’t be decorated. We disagree! By adding personal touches to your closet, just like you would any other area of your home, you will create a sense of peace and contentment. Add special photos, showcase important jewelry or add your favorite books. Creating a special nook or vanity is a great way to personalize your closet space. You can even create shelving units just for decoration.

2. Keep it clean. Many people don’t like spending time in their closet because it’s like spending time in the junk drawer: it’s cluttered, messy and stressful. By adding custom Classy Closets storage solutions, you will add up to three times as much storage space and be able to compartmentalize your clothes and other items to help keep your closet clean. A few ideas: hang your clothes at the end of everyday, keep your clothes organized according to color, show case your shoes. Keeping your closet organized and clean won’t be such a headache when you have a place to put everything.

3. Add lighting you love. Lighting is key! Choose a chandelier or modern light fixture that will brighten up your space and add beauty and charm.

4. Add a rug for pattern and color. The easiest way to add color and pattern to your closet is by incorporating a rug. Pick a rug size that will fit nicely in your closet and that adds brightness and color. Added bonus: you’ll love stepping on to a nice plush carpet each morning.

5. Wallpaper- a burst of color: Wallpaper, though admittedly not as easy, is another great way to add color. Subtle or bright? Metallic or matte? You choose! This is your closet, after all!

6. Mirror, Mirror on the wall… Don’t forget to add a full-length mirror. By adding a mirror, you will make getting ready in the morning a little less stressful. A large mirror will make your closet space feel larger and help to create more lighting. It’s a win-win.

7. Take a seat. Add a fun, beautiful chair to your closet, and you’ll have your own special space to sit and think or relax. If your closet is a smaller walk in or even a reach-in closet space, these ideas can still be incorporated to a smaller scale.

No matter the size of your closet, it’s easy (and important) to love your space.

1. PURGE! That’s right- it’s time to clean out your home office. Get rid of things that you don’t need and that are just taking up space. A general rule to follow is: if you haven’t used it in a year- throw it out! So, throw out those broken pens, old papers and magazines, and any other unwanted office supplies. By keeping things neat, tidy, and efficient you will streamline your office and your time.

2. Clean out your filing system. That’s right… we know nobody ever wants to do this… But, it will be helpful. We promise. It’s time to sort through those endless piles of paper. Shred unimportant files and organize your important ones. Just doing this will give you peace of mind when you walk into your office.

3.Clear off your desk. In order to feel organized your desk to be a clean space. Don’t store office supplies, printers, papers, mail, etc. on top of you desk. Clearing off your desk will make your space less cluttered. When designing your home office make sure you account for enough storage space.

4. One of the more accessible cupboards should include a space for your most current projects. Including incoming mail, bills to be paid, and outgoing mail. Stand-up file folders should help to organize your documents.

5. Clean out your computer. Yep, you’ve cleaned up your physical files and now it’s time to clean out your virtual ones. Spend an evening going through your computer and cleaning it up a bit. Erase old documents that you don’t need and create new files with short and definitive names to store the documents you do need. Name your pictures files by date so that you can easily find a picture you are looking for.

6. Buy a document shredder and a wastebasket for your office. This will help with anything unnecessary piling up around your office. Immediately shred any unwanted mail with personal information and toss the rest.

7. Place a picture or another sentimental piece to make your office feel more personal.

Contemporary vs. Traditional Design Styles

Hey Las Vegas!

Deciding on which style to design your home can be a challenge. Even within a family there can be many different design ideas and consolidating them into a cohesive look can be difficult. Because of this, it is important to research your options. With help from Expressive Creations, Classy Closets can help you on your way to designing your home in the style that you love!

Because two of the top competitors in the design world are the contemporary style and the traditional style, these are the styles we will be focusing on.

Contemporary

contemporary-interior-design-living-room

The contemporary style is a minimalist approach to design. It has less clutter and allows for a clean, modern feel. Walls, window treatments, upholstered furniture, and floors have a neutral color (usually white, black, or beige) as a base and flairs of color are included in accessories (such as pillows). Clean lines, geometric shapes, and a lack of design clutter are crucial to the contemporary design aesthetic. Tables are usually glass or metal and lighting is sleek and metal toned, although a lot of natural light is used. Interesting and unique design elements are used much more than in traditional designs.

Traditional

traditional-living-room-designs

Where contemporary uses a minimalist approach, traditional calls back to the baroque period of design. This design aesthetic usually presents a luxurious, rich feeling to a room. Walls are covered in wallpaper and crown mouldings are used to highlight the walls. The color palettes can include anything from pastels to bold, regal tones and fabrics are structured and multi-layered. Furniture has warm wood colors and usually has soft curve lines, reminiscent of the Queen Anne style. Metallic tones in artwork and framing are essential to the traditional style. Floral arrangements, landscape paintings, and baroque style frames are also key to this style.

Do you prefer the contemporary or the traditional style? Do you have a different favorite? Share your thoughts in the comment box below!
