Selecting wood products for LEED Projects can be very complex due to the amount of environmental attributes associated with wood. The LEED for Homes Rating System awards half points for cabinet systems or countertops that do not contain added ureaformaldehyde and at least one of the following attributes:
90% FSC Certified Wood by weight, or
90% Reclaimed Wood by weight, or
Post-consumer recycled content plus 1/2 of the pre-consumer content constitutes at
least 25% of the product by weight.
In addition, if the product is regionally sourced (within 500 miles) the project can earn an additional half point. Finally it is important to note that there is a LEED prerequisite requiring any new tropical wood to be Forest Stewardship Council Certified, due to the environmental concerns of rainforest depletion. If new or recycled tropical wood is used, the measure must be strictly adhered to.
