In our latest blog, we talked about the most important part of organizing your home office: evaluating your needs and designing your office space to fit your lifestyle. Now that you have your perfect home office- how do you organize it? Try some of these helpful hints:

1. PURGE! That’s right- it’s time to clean out your home office. Get rid of things that you don’t need and that are just taking up space. A general rule to follow is: if you haven’t used it in a year- throw it out! So, throw out those broken pens, old papers and magazines, and any other unwanted office supplies. By keeping things neat, tidy, and efficient you will streamline your office and your time.

2. Clean out your filing system. That’s right… we know nobody ever wants to do this… But, it will be helpful. We promise. It’s time to sort through those endless piles of paper. Shred unimportant files and organize your important ones. Just doing this will give you peace of mind when you walk into your office.

3.Clear off your desk. In order to feel organized your desk to be a clean space. Don’t store office supplies, printers, papers, mail, etc. on top of you desk. Clearing off your desk will make your space less cluttered. When designing your home office make sure you account for enough storage space.

4. One of the more accessible cupboards should include a space for your most current projects. Including incoming mail, bills to be paid, and outgoing mail. Stand-up file folders should help to organize your documents.

5. Clean out your computer. Yep, you’ve cleaned up your physical files and now it’s time to clean out your virtual ones. Spend an evening going through your computer and cleaning it up a bit. Erase old documents that you don’t need and create new files with short and definitive names to store the documents you do need. Name your pictures files by date so that you can easily find a picture you are looking for.

6. Buy a document shredder and a wastebasket for your office. This will help with anything unnecessary piling up around your office. Immediately shred any unwanted mail with personal information and toss the rest.

7. Place a picture or another sentimental piece to make your office feel more personal.

8. Consider carefully how you want to decorate your home office. More than likely you will spend a lot of time here. Consider what type of design elements you want to incorporate and slowly begin to add colors you want to incorporate. For design ideas see this Classy Closets’ blog post, and watch for more like it very soon.

Classy Closets Creates Custom Bathrooms

It seems that bathrooms usually fall to the bottom of our “To Renovate List.” They often get overshadowed by larger spaces in the home. However, we spend a lot of time in the bathroom- often times as much, or more, than in other rooms in our home. If your bathroom is blah, boring, or makes you cringe whenever you walk in- it’s time to consider renovating it.

There are a lot of pros to updating your bathroom. First, when you say goodbye to your outdated cabinets and colors and replace them with modern updates you will also add to the value of your home. Secondly, renovating your bathroom does not need to cost a lot of money. Because of the relatively small size, bathrooms won’t break the bank when renovating. Often times a coat of paint, new cabinets and/or counter tops, and some new fixtures will do the trick. Another pro to updating your bathroom is that when you design your new bathroom you have the ability to create more storage space. Added storage space will make your bathroom feel sleek and clean by getting rid of clutter. Finally, creating a beautiful, modern, clutter-free space will give you peace of mind. You will love stepping into an updated, new bathroom.

Knobs vs. Handles: Everything You Need to Know

handles 3With such a vast variety of design choices when it comes to knobs and handles, the decision can be overwhelming. Deciding which style best suits your décor can depend on a lot of factors. But take a deep breath because we’ve got everything you ever needed (or wanted) to know about knobs and handles.

Knobs:

-classic

-never go out of style

-large variety of styles to choose from

-easy to install

-single attachment point (only one screw)

-most common for kitchen cabinets

Handles:

-contemporary

-bold, modern lines

-preferred by those seeking a graceful or sophisticated look

-Facilitates your entire hand to open, which many consider to be more comfortable

-Offers additional strength and durability because they are attached in two places

-a bit more freedom with design

So which should you use?

Typically, handles are used for drawers and knobs for doors, but you can use either a knob or a handle pull for your drawers and cabinets. Both are functional, so the decision to use a knob or pull is really more about design not use. In general, a larger knob will be easier for the elderly to use than a small knob. But a handle pull will be even easier to use than a knob, particularly one large enough to get the back side of your hand through, so that gripping and pulling with fingers is not required. The “universal design” concept is to use knobs and pulls that will be appropriate as the homeowners age.

Knobs and Handle Trends:

One recent trend is to use larger knobs on drawers, maybe even ones that look a little “out of place”. Another recent trend is to use longer pull handles on tall cabinets. The longer line of the pull looks great with the longer line of the cabinet edge.

How can Classy Closets help?

We have a wide variety of handles and knobs for you to see and feel in our Chandler showroom. Our designers are also available to give advice and help you make the best design decisions for your home.

Reclaimed Wood Headboard How-to

wood headboard

Hey Chandler!

Looking for a shabby chic look for your room? Try a reclaimed wood headboard! This natural, organic look is great for any room and making it yourself allows you to personalize it to your own style. Even if you’re not looking for the shabby chic style, you can use normal wood and paint or stain it to give it a more refined look.

Materials:

Wood – old barn wood, reclaimed wood, wood pallets stained with a driftwood stain; anything will work!

Wood screws (make sure to measure the thickness of your wood so you get the right size screw)

(2) 1” x 4” x 64” boards for legs

Scrap wood

Fine grit sanding sponge

Stiff-bristle scrub brush

2-3 cans of clear, flat finish spray

Saw

1. Design your headboard. Be creative! Chalk out the dimensions of your headboard on the ground and lay the wood pieces out inside the box. This will give you room to rearrange the pieces and decide what you like best. Don’t cut the wood yet, just lay the pieces on top of each other and mark the places you want to cut with a pencil.

2. Cut the wood with a saw.

3. Flip the pieces over so the backs are facing up (your design should still be intact).

4. Cut your (2) 1” x 4” x 64” to the desired length for the legs and attach them along the two vertical edges (2-4” from the top) with your wood screws.

5. Attach your scrap wood to every seam to keep the wood pieces together. You might want to attach another 1” x 4” x 64” to the middle section of your headboard for extra support.

6. Sand the entire piece with the sanding sponge and then with the scrub brush to give the surface a smooth finish.

7. Add any more personalization now. Write a message in chalk or paint before you put the finishing spray over top.

8. Finally, spray your headboard with 3-5 coats of a flat, clear finish. The flat spray will keep the wood looking natural and weathered. For extra protection, add a couple extra coats to the bottom of the headboard where the mattress and sheets will rub against it.

9. Let dry for 24-48 hours.

10. Enjoy!

How to Paint Upholstery

paint couch

Hey Chandler!

Painting your furniture is a great, inexpensive way to personalize your home! Painting your furniture is a lot cheaper than completely reupholstering it and you can make it the perfect color for your home!

What you’ll need:

1 quart of either acrylic or latex satin paint in the color of your choice

1 spray bottle full of water (refillable)

1 paint brush

Fabric medium (equal to the amount of paint you use

Super fine grit sand paper

1. Wipe down the chair or couch so it’s totally clean.

2. Mix together 1:1 parts paint with the fabric medium. The fabric medium will help the fabric from becoming hard. Next, mix in water. There should be about ½ as much water as there is paint (1 part water, 2 parts paint).

3. Spray a section of the chair generously with water and rub the water into the fabric. Brush on the paint while blending it in. This base coat is supposed to be very watered down, so don’t overuse the mixture. Be sure to brush with the grain on your last stroke so the fabric doesn’t dry out of place.

4. Apply two coats of this watered down mixture to the chair. Each layer should be very thin and apply more water if it is too thick in some places. Be sure to let each layer dry before starting a new one.

5. Sand down any particularly rough patches of your chair in the direction of the grain.

6. Finally, apply the top coat. Once again, mix 1:1 parts paint with fabric medium, adding in only a small amount of water to dilute the mixture. This will be the coat that gives the chair its deep color, so paint this layer more generously and fully. Let dry.

7. Enjoy!

We hope you love your unique chair that you’ve made yourself! For other innovative ideas, check out our Pinterest page!

How to Repaint an Old Dresser

Dresser repainting 018

Hey Chandler!

A great, simple way to decorate any room is to refinish a piece of furniture, like a dresser. We all have that dresser from the 90s that we’ve never gotten rid of. It sits there in the corner of a closet, unused and out of style. However, you can give it new life with a fresh coat of paint and chic new knobs!

What you’ll need:

paint brush

sander

wood block (optional)

damp cloth

paint

knobs

1. With heavy and medium grit sand paper, sand the dresser following the wood grain. Start with the heavy and then go back over it with the medium grit sand paper to smooth any ridges the heavy paper has left. Use long, even sanding strokes with applied pressure to remove the paint. It is not necessary to get down to bare wood for repainting. You only need to remove the shiny finish and have a smooth surface. (An easy way to sand is by wrapping the sanding paper around a wood block. It makes it easier to maneuver and gives your hands a break.)

2. Wipe the residue away with a damp cloth. If there are any shiny spots left, sand them again. Allow the dresser to dry.

3. Apply your choice of color to the dresser. If you don’t want to prime it, simply use two coats of the color you want. Start at the top of the dresser and work your way down in one direction, staying with the grain, giving it a smooth, finished look.

4. Add matching knobs to your dresser, and you’re done!

Add this new and improved dresser to a nursery, kids room, or guest room to finish off a room!
